    It only takes one …
It only takes one sperm to fertilize an egg hence why only one makes it through and becomes (usually) one baby. The other sperm just die because they were unsuccessful in fertilizing the egg. The one sperm that does make it through to the nucleus passes on it’s genetic information as chromosomes and thus starting meiosis. You can only have 46 chromosomes (23 from each parent) and if all those sperm fertilize that egg, you’re going to have some problems.

    I wouldn’t say …
I wouldn’t say failed. It requires many, many sperm to fertilize an egg, but only one successfully makes it through the membrane. That’s because the acrosomes of many sperm are required to actually catalytically break down the egg’s membrane.

    True, once the …
True, once the nucleus of the sperm is released into the cytoplasm of the egg, a shift in cytoplasmic ions, currents, and gradient occur, changing the membrane of the egg and preventing further intrusion from other sperms. those that you see are just many failed sperms got stuck to the surface of the egg but never made it through.

I thought only one sperm cell makes it into the egg..

    That’s a smooth …
That’s a smooth muscle cell migrating into the lumen of an atherosclerotic artery. An aggregation of smooth muscle cells will attempt to widen the lumen to mitigate the effects of advanced atherosclerosis.
