What year of medical school do you start dissecting dead bodies?
I’m working on a novel and am having a hard time finding out when exactly a medical student might dissect a dead body. And would it only be that year or is it possible someone would want to dissect more than once in a different year of med school?
Human Anatomy (the course in which they dissect bodies) is typically taken in the first semester of medical school.
Students may use cadavers in subsequent semesters of medical school to practice procedures or to examine specialized anatomical structures.
That entirely depends on the medical school you’re in. Over here, medical students do get to work with human bodies in their first year. They’d get labs involving bodies every so often.
And, of course, it’s very possible that multiple dissections might be done in multiple years.

Gross anatomy is usually a first semester course in most medical schools. In some schools it may be a daily course, while in others in might be three times a week. Some schools have expanded it from a single semester course to two semesters.
It’s usually one of the first courses one takes in medical school as it is an opportunity for the school to begin inculcating the respect for the body. It’s also the course most students are most anxious about, so it’s better not to have them exposed to the cruel exaggerations that upper classmates would undoubtedly subject them to.
