I’d like to go to medical school to become a doctor, but my family doesnt have a lot of money. Right now i’m attending a 4 yr college and paying 44,000 a year for tuition. Most of the cost is covered in loans, so when i graduate i will owe a shitload. I need to know of some of the less expensive medical schools here in california. Can u guys give me specific names of schools?

Wow, well if you are a California resident, it is pretty inexpensive compared to other colleges. University of California (all 3–Los Angeles, San Diego, AND San Fransisco!) costs a little under 19,000. U of C Davis costs 35,065 for both resident and nonresident. U of C Irvine costs 22,821. Less than 19 is great. I would be pretty happy if I were you. 19 is a deal compared to other medical schools. I agree with the above comment. When it comes to cost, don’t worry about it. However, if cost is a priority, keep the 3 mentioned above as your top priorities. Financial aid is liberal in medical school.

I’m looking at schools in texas and both my undergraduate degrees are from oklahoma schools. I ran into a lot of problems transferring credits for my 2nd degree. Is it the same for medical schools?

You aren’t transferring any credits when you are applying to a medical school. When you submit a transcript, it is simply verifying that you have met requirements and validating GPAs.

Every medical school receives applications from students in every state (as do undergraduate universities) so the admissions people are very familiar with every school out there. If you encountered a previous problem with some credits, there must be something unusual about those specific credits.

I’m currentely a sophorome in HS and I aspire to become a pediatritian, but when I look for the best medical schools there is research medical schools and primary care.
* And can you please tell me what I should be doing in HS to have a good record for medical schools? And what major pediatritian would be on? Thanks!

Research is lab and theoretical work. Developing vaccines, etc.

Primary care work it clinical practise, treating patients.

Some schools are rated better for research like Harvard, some better for clinical like UCSF or Stanford.

In clinical practise you still have to do research work, just not as much. More than half your work is clincial and the rest research.

In research one would imagine it’s just the opposite.

Pediatrican is 4 years extra schooling after you finsihed medical school and internship. So it’s a 12-13 year invesntment in college time.

You need to take lab biology, chemistry, math through trig, statistics if it is offered.

If you’re going to a private universith 2 years foreign language is usually required.

Do medical schools base a lot of their decision on where you went to school or more of grades, MCAT and activities?

For example: I am picking which school to go to next year for my undergrad. I am between Central Florida and Marquette. If i go to Central Florida will that drastically affect my chances of getting into Med school.

No, you are correct, a medical school is most concerned with your grades and MCAT scores. Look for a school that suits your needs so that you are set up for success. You will need a 3.5 GPA or better to go to med school. UCF is a fine school. Marquette is an excellent school and you will be challenged and well prepared for medical school but Jesuits are known for being tough graders sometimes. Marquette is also very expensive. With almost no scholarships available for medical school (it can cost $50,000/yr or more), you also want to think about how much money you will owe at the end of your education. Sounds like you’re leaning UCF, another perk is that Florida has a couple of medical schools to choose from and maintaining your FL residency will help. Study hard and good luck!

There are 35 schools that offer the combined degree program. I’ve provided the link to the Association of American Medical Colleges list.

There are some things you should know. Most of these programs are 7 years–3 years of undergrad and 4 years of med school. Most of the programs are quite small–around 10 students. Getting accepted into a program is difficult, but remaining in one is even more difficult. Maintaining an exceptionally high GPA without faltering is the usual standard.

I read in several places there are many medical schools that look less at grades and instead are more focused on the "well-rounded" applicant (i.e. — someone that has significant experience in the health field but maybe not as high of a GPA). None of these websites, however, listed any of these schools! Does anyone know the names of specific medical school that view applicants this way? Help!

Not any reputable medical schools that I know of. "Good" medical schools and grad schools don’t care about your extracurricular activities, but instead grades, GPA, and GAT/GRE/MCAT scores. Having a job during your college years will help in acceptance perhaps. Unless your extracurricular activities were the ordinary, unspecial ones like campus ministry, Choral groups, Concert band, Frats/sororities, Musical theater, student government, Student newspaper, etc. they don’t matter.

I’ve decided I want to go to Medical School and I know that I have a serious chance as far as important scores and GPA. I really want to go to a highly reputable, respectable and well-known medical school. Of course Harvard is an obvious answer, along with some of the other Ivies, and I’m looking into those, but what are some of the others? I live in Washington State (I know UW is great) and I’m willing to moved to any state I have to. So what are the BEST medical schools in the US?

In my opinion, Johns Hopkins is one of the best. I know many graduates from there and they are excellent physicians. I am also impartial to Tulane because I work for the med school but honestly you can’t go wrong with an Ivy league school if you have the GPA, MCAT score, and pre req classes. Good Luck
